HUD to Galveston mayor: Rebuild the 569 units

Galveston must replace 569 units of public housing demolished after being flooded by Hurricane Ike in 2008, HUD said in a written statement issued Monday after a meeting between Mayor Lewis Rosen and Housing Secretary Shaun Donovan.  The statement said Donovan made it clear the “city must cooperate with the state to replace 569 units of public housing that were damaged or destroyed by the storm.”  It also called the one-for-one replacement of housing units the “centerpiece of a legal agreement the state made more than two years ago.”   That was a reference to a conciliation agreement state officials signed in 2010 to settle a complaint lodged by housing advocates when Gov. Rick Perry attempted to shift disaster recovery money from coastal communities, including Galveston, to pay for infrastructure projects in places not damaged during hurricanes Dolly and Ike.
