Construction crews broke ground on a 50-unit affordable housing complex in Northeast Portland. The Eliot MLK building, which will incorporate many energy efficient features, should be complete by next September. Most of the apartments will have one bedroom, but eight units will contain two bedrooms. “There is a shortage of affordable rental units in Portland’s central core,” said Sarah Stevenson, Innovative Housing executive director. “Close to the MAX and bus lines, these units are sorely needed by people with lower-paying jobs who need to live close to work.” The builder predicts the nearly $12 million project will create about 50 jobs during construction.
