Construction begins Thursday on 60 one-bedroom apartments that target low-income seniors in Auburn. Mercy Housing will break ground on the almost $17 million Mercy Auburn Senior Community on about three acres of the Sisters of Mercy West Midwest Auburn campus. The environmentally sustainable development will provide senior housing at or below 50 percent of the area median income, and joins Mercy’s other affordable housing projects in the capital region. The three-story building was designed to fit in with the serene natural environment on the campus, complement the Spanish Colonial architectural style and provide opportunities for the residents to build a sense of community, the developers said. The LEED-certified building will use locally available building materials as much as possible. The development team also includes Chris Lamen and Associates Architects, Cunningham Engineering and Sunseri Construction Inc.
