What little they had, they gave to Staten Islanders in need after Hurricane Sandy

“At least we have homes,” Ms. Lewis said gratefully, explaining that residents of [NYCHA’s] South Beach Houses collected clothing and coats. And residents continued to drop off donations at the community center on Monday.

“Here’s a quilt I took off my bed, and a full-size flannel sheet set,” said Dolores Lach, a Lamport Boulevard resident for over 45 years. “People can use something warm, and I have another quilt. I brought clothes here yesterday, and I’m going now to look for mittens, gloves, hats and scarves.”

NYCHA staff will load the boxes into trucks and bring them to relief distribution centers on the East Shore.

“We don’t have a lot, but we’re doing something,” said Ms. Lewis.
