Recent developments in City Hall have taught us an important political truth: When confronted with a mushrooming controversy it is never a good strategy to cover your ears and sing, “La-la-la-la” in the hope that it will go away.
The charges against Housing Authority Director Henry Alvarez, a personal friend of Mayor Ed Lee, have been shocking, outrageous and controversial. Three lawsuits have been filed against him alleging abusive behavior and racial discrimination. Dozens of employees have met with the mayor’s staff about Alvarez’s leadership and the maintenance problems at the city’s public housing, such as taking three weeks to get a toilet unplugged.
If true, they constitute an ugly scandal. I think everyone would agree with that. Except we have yet to hear Lee say that.
