Housing Authority of Kansas City nears end of 20-year receivership

The 20-year receivership of the Housing Authority of Kansas City is finally winding down.

U.S. District Judge Dean Whipple on Tuesday gave the HAKC and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development until April 1 to negotiate a consent decree that would return the agency to local control.

That would also end a court case challenging the HAKC’s operations that has been pending in Kansas City federal court since 1989.

If the parties can’t reach an agreement, Whipple will set a hearing on a motion HUD filed Friday that would dissolve the receivership immediately.
